Performances This Week
UA OPERA. Crowder Hall, UA Music Building. South end of
the pedestrian underpass on Speedway east of Park Avenue. Continuing
through October 25: The Barber of Seville, a comic opera
by Gioacchino Fossini, presented in English by the UA School of
Music and Dance. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday,
and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12, $10 UA faculty/staff, $6 students/seniors.

UApresents brings the classic musical The King and I
at 8 p.m. Friday, October 23, and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, October

TRIO VORONEZH. Russia's lively young chamber music
group, Trio Voronezh, play two free mini-concerts at Ric's Café
(5605 E. River Road) at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, and at
the Main Library at noon on Thursday, October 29, followed by
their full length performance at 7:30 p.m. that evening at the
Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway Blvd. Cost
is $20, half-price for children 18 and under and students with

ARIZONA FRIENDS OF CHAMBER MUSIC. TCC Leo Rich Theatre.
260 S. Church Ave. The Arizona Friends of Chamber music present
their second concert of the season, featuring the Franz Liszt
Chamber Orchestra with Stephen Prutsman, pianist, at 8 p.m. Thursday,

FRASER AND SKYEDANCE. ASDB Berger Performing Arts Center.
1200 W. Speedway Blvd. Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and Skyedance,

GERSHWIN CENTENNIAL CONCERT. Unitarian Universalist Church
of Tucson. 4831 E. 22nd St. Mike Palter and Lynne Jackson, musical
duo from Boston, sing and play on piano and bass the songs of
George and Ira Gershwin. The George Gershwin Centennial Concert
begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 24. Tickets are $10 for
adults, $5 for children, and may be obtained by calling the church

OUR TOWN CONCERT SERIES. Tohono Chul Park Performance Garden.

UA VISITING COMPOSER SERIES. UA Music Building, south end
of the pedestrian underpass on Speedway east of Park Avenue. American
composer and pianist Larry Bell kicks off the first in a series
of six visiting composer lectures presented by the UA School of
Music and Dance, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. The series
features composers' unique expression of their music and its genesis
and development over time. Bell is in concert from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

GREEN VALLEY SHOWCASE. Valley Presbyterian Church. 2800
S. Camino del Sol, Green Valley. The UA School of Music and Dance
and the Green Valley Concert Association present the Green Valley
Faculty Showcase, featuring UA faculty, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October
23. Feature players include: Ed Reid on trumpet; Pamela Decker
on organ; Jeffrey Showell, viola; Patrick Neher, string bass;
Nancy Green, cello; Tom Ervin, trombone; and Jeffrey Haskell,
piano. Program includes Kornauth's "Viola Sonata op. 3, Concerto
in A-flat," by Alexander Arutiunian, a Gershwin tribute,
and original compositions by Decker, Neher, and pianist Suzanne

BAND CLASSES. Desert Dove Christian Church. 6163 S. Midvale
Road. Desert Dove School of Music offers band, orchestra, keyboard,

and materials. Private instruction on piano, strings, guitar and

CALL FOR COMPOSERS. Desert voices invites young women,
ages 16 to 30, to submit their original choral compositions. The
new work is to be written for a 50-member SATB chorus, not exceed
five minutes in length. Deadline for entries is November 15, with
the winner being notified in January 1999. Send seven copies of

CALL FOR MUSICIANS. The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra
invites Tucson-area musicians to join the group and be a part
of their 20th-anniversary season. String players and percussionists
especially needed. Auditions are not necessary. The orchestra
rehearses from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Tucson High Magnet
School, 400 N. Second Ave. There are also rehearsals on Saturday

FOOTHILLS PHIL. Catalina Foothills High School Band Room.
4300 E. Sunrise Drive. The Foothills Phil, a community, intergenerational
orchestra conducted by Laszlo Veres, invites musicians of all
ages and abilities to join and share their love of music. There
are no auditions, but students younger than high-school age should
have the recommendation of their music teacher to participate.

FOOTHILLS WOMEN'S CHORUS. A group of women who love to

performed in front of various organizations and retirement communities.

STRING PLAYERS WANTED. The Civic Orchestra of Tucson, a
60-piece volunteer symphony orchestra starting its 24th season,
needs violin, viola, cello, and especially bass players. Come

WEST AFRICAN DRUM. Learn the rhythms of Guinea and Mali
