AHS LECTURE SERIES. The Arizona Historical Society hosts Desert Harmony: Arizona's Musical Traditions, a spring lecture series from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through March 20, in the Arizona Historical Society auditorium, 949 E. BUFFALO SOLDIERS REVISITED. Throughout February, Tucson/Pima Library hosts a series of programs in honor of African American History Month. Michael S. ANCIENT EDOM. John Oleson, archaeologist from the University of Victoria, Canada, presents a slide lecture entitled Water and Society in Ancient Edom at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, in the UA Franklin Building, Room 209. Lecture recounts the importance of local and regional water supplies to the Nabataean settlers of ancient Auara, now known as Humeima, Jordan. COSTA RICAN RAIN FORESTS. Elke Buschgbeck and Amy Saivre of the UA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary biology present a free slide lecture entitled Exploring the Rain Forest of Costa Rica at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, February 15, in the PAS (Physics) Building, Room 201, on the UA mall. PREHISTORIC SONORA. Dr. Randall McGuire presents recent research and new ideas in The Archaeology of Cerro de Trincheras: A Prehistoric Terraced Village in Sonora, Mexico at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 19, in UMC DuVal auditorium, 1501 N. CARVAJAL'S LEGACY. Dr. Joseph Schraibman, professor of romance languages at Washington University in St. Louis, presents The Legacy of Luis de Carvajal in the Southwest at a lunch forum at noon Friday, February 16, at Arizona Inn, 2200 E. Elm St. Carvajal was a converso, a Jew who converted to Christianity during the Spanish Inquisition, and was given one of the largest land grants ever chartered by King Philip II of Spain. UN PEACEKEEPING. The United Nations Association of Southern Arizona and the League of Women Voters present United Nations Peacekeeping in the Post-Cold War World at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 22, at the Plaza Hotel, 1900 E. Speedway. Panelists include: Clifton Wilson, UA international relations professor emeritus; Keijo Korhonen, retired U.S. Ambassador to Finland; Sheila Tobias, feminist writer and arms control specialist; and moderator Susan Ward of the UN Association of Southern Arizona. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. Linda Fischer and Rose Daly-Rooney of the Arizona Center for Disability Law give a free presentation on the Americans with Disabilities Act from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 15, at Palo Verde Hospital, 2695 N. Craycroft Road, in the Alegria room. The act prohibits discrimination against people with mental disabilities in employment, public service, public accommodation and telecommunication, and requires employment opportunities, equal treatment and promotion opportunities and reasonable accommodations for workers with disabilities. REEL TREASURES. The UA Extended University offers a film lecture series entitled Reel Treasures from 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays, continuing through March 24, at the Main Gate Center, 888 N. Euclid Ave. Series takes viewers on a journey through universal issues raised in films like The Name of the Rose, Gentleman's Agreement, The Nasty Girl, Dr. Strangelove and the Razor's Edge. After each movie, faculty will discuss related social topics. The Name of the Rose explores the historical figures that might have inspired Umberto Eco's fictional characters in the movie.
