Now every week you'll have a cool excuse to turn off the television and head downtown for a peek at what Tucson has to offer. The downtown Arts District will be brimming with activity all day and all night on Saturday, June 21: This special Night For Art Lovers transforms the Ronstadt Transit Center into a fun and delightful international setting full of wandering minstrels and musicians, easels and tables with artists showcasig their talents via works-in-progress. Show off your smashing pooch and help support the Humane Society of Tucson at the second annual Pet Fiesta from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at Plaza Palomino, at Swan and Fort Lowell roads. Pets of all kinds (one of last year's winners was a hermit crab) will compete for the coveted titles of Most Unusual Pet, Best Dressed Pet, Owner/Pet Lookalike, and more. Contest entry fee is $3 per animal, per class, and $5 for the Pet Parade, with all proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Tucson and the animals in its care. The purpose of the ceremony, performed by David Galaz of Old Pascua Village, is to bless the seeds, the soil and the farmers, and to pray for good rain. Traditional dances will be presented by the Blackwater Basket Dancers and Barnaby Lewis of the Gila River Indian Community, and a number of social songs will be performed by Vechij Ne'ethan Mahsig. VideoTENSIONS presents VideoPARKS: Visiting video artist Austin Allen will screen and discuss his feature length video documentary, Claiming Open Spaces, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19. Allen's film explores African-American culture's clash with the design of the modern American city. The screening and discussion are free. Call 621-7352 for information on this and future screenings. The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation presents Speak No Evil, or Shut My Mouthpiece, an evening of fine dining and murder mystery surprises Sunday, June 22. The evening begins with cocktails in the courtyard at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and the performance at 8 p.m. Audience members who correctly guess the murderer will have an opportunity to win a trip for two to New York.
