CINCO DE MAYO. The Fourth Avenue merchants celebrate Cinco
de Mayo with a car show from 8 a.m. to
3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, sponsored by the Tucson Street Rod Association.
Festivities also include a block party on Seventh Street between
Fourth and Fifth Avenues, with activities for kids of all ages,
Latin music, trolley rides and the "Great Strides" cystic
fibrosis awareness walk from Catalina Park to Himmel Park and

CLUB KINETIC. Mat Bevel Institute. 530 Stone Ave. Witness
the theatrical spectacle of Club Kinetic, the exotic vaudevillian
disco circus staged by performance artist Mat Bevel and company,
from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Friday. This week features a performance
by the Crawdaddy-O Brass Band, with tunes by DJs Snoots, Mek,
Bonus and Mike Francis. Admission is $5. Call 622-0192 for information.
DOWNTOWN SATURDAY. Downtown Tucson is alive all day and
all night celebrating Cinco de Mayo on Saturday, May 2. Live entertainment
includes the Howard Wooten Quartet and the Turbin Jones swing/ska
band from 7 to 10 p.m. in Arizona Alley, south of Congress Street.
Don't miss the El Centro Arts & Crafts Showcase at the Ronstadt
Transit Center, Sixth Avenue at Congress Street. Visit Winsett
Park between 7 and 10 p.m. for Tucson Musicians' showcase artist

FIESTA DE MAYO. Gramer Hall. SS. Peter and Paul Catholic
School. 1436 N. Campbell Ave. The Fiesta de Mayo, an event benefiting
the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday,
May 2, and includes a variety of events: a Mexican dinner, folklórico
dancers, Mariachi music, dancing and a raffle with several big
ticket prizes, including UA Men's Basketball season tickets for
1998-9. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. Call 325-2431

GOOD TASTE. Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. 7000 N. Resort
Drive. Area chefs host Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation
from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 3. This culinary benefit features
food and wine tasting from more than 20 local restaurants including
Fuego, Janos, Westward Look Resort, Kingfisher, Terra Nova, Loews
Ventana Canyon Resort and Café Terra Cotta. Tickets are
$45, and proceeds benefit anti-hunger groups such as the Tucson

HEALING ARTS FESTIVAL. Armory Park Senior Center. Join
fellow Tucsonans for Building Community: The Spring Healing
Arts Festival from 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Events include
afternoon workshops "Nutrition and Pregnancy," "Birth
in the Black Sea" and "Rewombing Dance," and an
evening celebration with music, poetry, food, puppetry and raffles.
There's a procession celebrating solidarity and unity leaving
from Studio 101, 101 N. Fifth St., and proceeding through Downtown
Saturday night to Armory Park at 6 p.m. Call 629-0959 for information.
LATINO COMEDY NIGHT. Laffs Comedy Caffé. 2900 E.
Broadway Blvd., Suite 154. Movie and television veteran Vic Dunlop
gives a special benefit performance at Laffs biannual Latino Comedy
Night at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Proceeds benefit the Calli Ollin
Academy and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Tickets are
$10 in advance, $12 at the door, available at Laffs. Call 32-FUNNY

NOW CONFERENCE. InnSuites Hotel. 475 W. Granada Ave. The
Southwest Regional of the National Organization for Women holds
its annual conference Friday through Sunday, May 1 through 3.
This year's theme is Women's Empowerment: Living the Legacy.
Speakers will speak about violence against women, women's history,
diversity, finance, health issues, and the Older Americans Act.

PET ADOPTATHON. Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter. 5278 E.
21st St. Looking for that special friend? The Hermitage Cat Shelter
may just have the friend for you. The Shelter is hosting a Pet
Adoptathon from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, to help place orphaned

PHARIE TALES. The Valley of the Moon. 2544 E. Allen Road,
north of Prince Road, east of Tucson Boulevard. Children and adults
alike will enjoy Phractured Pharie Tales, in which the
Valley's roaming players reenact scenes from pharie tale phavorites.
Performances run Friday through Sunday, from May 1 through 16.
Tours leave the gate every 30 minutes between 7 and 9 p.m. Admission
is $5 for adults, $3 for kids 7 to 12, and free for members and

TEEN DANCE. Tucson Association for the Blind. 3767 E. Grant
Road. Teens are invited to come out and dance from 7 to 10 p.m.
Friday, May 1. This fun-for-all dance is sponsored by Third Street
Kids, Direct and the Spaulding Foundation. Refreshments will be

TUCSON FOLK FESTIVAL. El Presidio Park, Church Avenue and
Alameda Street. The 13th annual Tucson Folk Festival features
two days of fun, food and music--more than 100 acoustic musicians
perform folk, bluegrass, blues, folk rock, ragtime, gospel and
ethnic styles. Award-wining singer/songwriter Chris Smither headlines
this year's festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday,
May 2, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 3. There are workshops,
open jams and a children's show, as well as a variety of food
and crafts booths. As always, the festival is free. A kick-off
concert featuring Jason Ecklund and Al Perry and the Cattle gets
underway at 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Goddard Hall, 4831 E. 22nd
St. There's also a post-festival party with music by the Mollys
at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Rialto Theater, 318 E. Congress
St. Tickets for each of these events is $6.
HELP UPSTAIRS. Hotel Congress. 311 E. Congress St. The
Upstairs Theatre Company holds its annual benefit, Upstairs Aid,
at 8 p.m. Monday, May 4. The event features performances by Al
Perry and the Cattle, Creosote, The Osgoods and the band formerly
known as StarCrunch, as well as screenings of the films open
'Til Three and The Displaced. Tickets are $5, available

WAREHOUSE WALKING TOURS. Hotel Congress Lobby. 311 E. Congress
St. The Tucson Arts District Partnership offers tours of the historic
downtown warehouse district from 9 to 11 a.m. the second Saturday
of the month, through May 9. This guided tour covers a one-mile
area, and includes an overview of the area's history, with brief
visits to several artists' studios. Reservation by 5 p.m. the
