Permaculture Drylands Institute

STAFF PICK: Environmental politics can get pretty messy,
and sometimes it seems like the big money people always end up
on top. So forget them. Permaculturalists have ways of designing
individual homes and yards to demonstrate the earth-friendly,
people-affirming principles most of us want to see practiced,
eventually, on the community level. Tucson's permaculture group
is loosely affiliated with the Permaculture Drylands Institute
in Santa Fe, but it derives its life from a handful of inspired
Tucsonans who teach and model solar energy design, water harvesting,
native plant use, drylands gardening, and other sensible desert
strategies. They see themselves as a thread running through Tucson's
rich fabric of hardworking, community-building grassroots organizations:
Out on Bale, Women for Sustainable Technology, Tucson Organic
Gardeners, Tucson Traders, Native Seeds/SEARCH...the list goes
on and on. For more information on drylands resources, call 572-1672.
