Best "Retired" Environmental Activist

Hector Conde

STAFF PICK: While most of his peers are out enjoying leisurely games of golf, retired electrical engineer Hector Conde is busy researching water use data for the courses they play on. In fact, Conde often works 50- and 60-hour weeks without pay, providing his favorite environmental causes with both technical help and just plain old hard work. With his wife Josephine backing him up, he's worked on the Sonoran Desert Protection Plan, collected signatures for a recent rezoning referendum (half the successful total!), provided data for legislation against rent-a-cow tax-cheats, produced reports, written memos, attended hearings, and staffed information booths. He even funded an engineering study for Amphi's alternative high-school committee out of his own pocket. Way to go, Hector! Hole in one.
