FUN AT CORONADO. The Coronado National Memorial offers free fun and informative programs for the entire family throughout August. No reservations are necessary; just bring yourself in sturdy clothes and shoes, wear lots of sunscreen and don't forget drinking water! Come celebrate the Southwest Wings Birding Festival at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 17. Study bird calls, nests, feathers and bones. Learn to use binoculars and make your own "nest builder." Meet at the picnic area. The Memorial's Visitor Center is located in Montezuma Canyon, five miles west of Highway 92 (15 miles south of Sierra Vista, 21 miles west of Bisbee). Call the Visitor Center at (520) 366-5515 for information. HIGH STEPPIN'. The Forest Service Volunteers offer free guided hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains on Fridays through August 30. Hikes are under seven miles, with no more than a 1,500 foot elevation gain. All hikes leave at 9:30 a.m. Children 18-and-under need to bring a parent or guardian. Specific locations vary. Call 881-1309 or 322-0998 for information. Nature Conservancy. Visit the Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Visitor Center and enjoy bird watching, guided tours and hikes. Regular preserve hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Take Highway 82 to Patagonia, head west on Fourth Avenue, and south on Pennsylvania. Call (520) 394-2400 for information. ORIENT YOURSELF. Get to know the world around you, and how to find your way through it, with help from the Tucson Orienteering Club at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, August 18, at Shower's Point campground. A beginners' clinic starts at 9:30 a.m., and the courses will run until noon. Cost is $5, $7 per team. Take Catalina Highway along Mount Lemmon to Organization Ridge Road (around milepost 16), then turn left and follow the orange and white signs to registration. Call 628-8985 for information. Learn about the uses of arid-adapted plants, landscaping designs and materials on a Xeriscape Landscape Tour beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 17. A drip irrigation demonstration will follow. Tohono Chul Park grounds are open from 7 a.m. to sunset daily. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2. Enjoy a Walk in the Park tour at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tours depart at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; Art in the Park tours, docent-guided looks at gallery exhibits, are at 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tohono Chul needs docents for its 1996-1997 program. Training begins Wednesday, October 2, and meets twice weekly for three hours. Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists seek individuals who love nature, the outdoors and working with children. Training begins in September. Call 298-4902 for information. Out Of Town SEE THE TREES. Visit the Arboretum in Flagstaff between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekends through September. Pack a picnic lunch and cool off among the many garden displays; see endangered plants and animals; or just relax under a pine. Admission is $3, free for those 18 and under.
