OUTDOORSHIGH STEPPIN'. The Forest Service Volunteers offer free guided hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains on Fridays through August 30. Hikes are under seven miles, with no more than a 1,500 foot elevation gain. All hikes leave at 9:30 a.m. Children 18-and-under need to bring a parent or guardian. Specific locations vary. This evening-long affair begins with a walk in the oak woodland habitat of the Santa Rita Mountains, then continues with a delicious sunset dinner of pollo Veracruzana. After dinner, Carl Olson, UA Assistant Curator of Entomology, presents several blacklight stations to see the brilliant colors of the scarab and blister beetles. Abenaki Indian master storyteller Gerard Tsonkawa rounds out the evening with captivating bug tales around the campfire. Cost is $49, all inclusive. Call early for reservations. SEE THE TREES. Visit the Arboretum in Flagstaff between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekends through September. Pack a picnic lunch and cool off among the many garden displays; see endangered plants and animals; or just relax under a pine. Admission is $3, free for those 18 and under.
