HONG KONG THRONG: The prestigious Hong Kong Theater of
the Deaf rolls into town for a performance of their latest work,
Creation. They'll be arriving fresh from the Art and Soul
Festival in L.A., courtesy of Tucson's Third Street Kids troupe.
Creation is largely comprised of visual poetry, which
means elaborate and intricate facial expressions, body movements
and gestures. That body language is captured in rhythmic movements
of different velocities, establishing graphically clear images,
interesting patterns and visual humor. With a musical backdrop,
lighting and white gloves, Creation promises "a performance
of a new art form with visual poetry at its best."
Show time is 7 p.m. in the Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200
E. Speedway. Tickets are $6, $4 for children, and available at
the International Arts Center. For details, call 622-4100.
TALL TALKERS: Yarn spinners, fib fabricators and rube remodelers
all gather for good narrative intention with Tellers of Tales,
southern Arizona's storytelling organization. Dingy Sharp will
present a program titled Father and Grandfather Stories.
Following the presentation will be an open session for far-fetched
testimonials by greenhorns and grizzled spinners alike. There
will also be a free workshop on developing and presenting family
stories.
Tellers of Tales meets at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 5, in the Himmel
Park Library, 1035 N. Treat Ave. Admission is free. For details,
call 326-8966.
RETRO ROMP: It's a modern hybrid of the Lindy, Jitterbug,
and other buzzing steps from the '30s and '40s, and it's hotter'n'
a gecko on I-19.
We're talking West Coast Swing, and it rips across local floors
every Thursday with the Tucson Swing Dance Club. This non-profit
bunch is devoted to teaching the sizzling step to you and yours.
Lessons run from 7 to 7:45 p.m. for beginners, 7:45 to 8:30 p.m.
for intermediates, with general dancing from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.
in the Tucson Women's Club, 6245 E. Bellevue St. Admission is

URBAN SIZZLER: Tucson's hot urban core boils over with
culture on June 5 at another Downtown Saturday Night.
Recent Tucson Arts Award-winner Homero Ceron performs an eclectic
mix of percussive, Latin and Caribbean rhythms in the Ronstadt
Transit Center, while Linda Lou Reed dishes up folk, classic and
country on Arizona Avenue.
Up on Fourth Avenue, KXCI Radio spins another music mix, while
The Annie Hawkins band rips up the stage in Winsett Park. Isabelle
the Lute Player tears into a variety of lute-related instruments--including
the Turkish oud--on the Fifth Street Stage.
In addition to music, there will be tons of art, and plenty of
restaurants dishing up great chow for another celebration of the
Old Pueblo's urban core.
Downtown Saturday Night runs from 7 to 10 p.m. For information,
call 624-9977.
