NATIVE TREASURES: Native Americans, local experlove and
knowledge of this parched land in Weaving Treasures, Spinning
Tales and Singing Songs.
For centuries, the native people of Arizona have found inspiration
in desert plants and animals for their arts and crafts. That deep
knowledge of fellow critters extends to another medium in this
special evening of storytelling and demonstrations.
Staffers from the Arizona State Museum will likewise share what
they've learned about timeless traditions from sandal making and
rug weaving to singing. The whole family can watch the preparation
of yucca fibers for sandal production, or weaving a blanket on
a traditional loom.
The free event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 11, in the
Arizona State Museum, inside the main gate east of Park Avenue
on the UA campus. Call 621-6302 for information.
