Best Books--Chain

Borders Books & Music
4235 N. Oracle Road

READERS' PICK: There was a time, years and years ago, when Borders was a little independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a town full of poets and radical philosophers. Borders grew up to be a national chain numbering hundreds of stores, and some of those poets and philosophers grew up to be land developers and junk-bond traders. For the ones who didn't, Borders offers a huge range of titles, from current bestsellers to obscure titles from university presses, as well as magazines, out-of-town and international newspapers, and an astonishingly good selection of CDs, cassettes and videos. With a café on the side and lots of comfortable couches and easy chairs scattered around the store, there's every incentive to kick off your shoes and spend a day roaming the stacks.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 5130 E. Broadway; 7325 N. La Cholla Blvd.
