STAFF PICK: If you want to know what the Santa Cruz looked
like before Tucson turned into a megalopolis, check out the San
Pedro River in the San Pedro National Conservation Area near
Sierra Vista. Of course, this works both ways. With Sierra Vista
growing by leaps and bounds, the paving of the countryside and
the continuing of agricultural and industrial pumping, the future
of the river is uncertain, at best. For a glimpse of the future,
go stand by our own dusty Santa Cruz now, and see what the San
Pedro will look like in 50 years--if things continue as they are.
But don't wait another year to see the San Pedro in all its burbling
glory. Seasonal, guided hikes are offered by the Friends of the
San Pedro River.
