STAFF PICK: Like Bob Dylan himself, all great artists take
risks and learn from their mistakes. And like all creative endeavors,
Community Radio KXCI--in its 14 years of broadcasting--has been
home to some truly exceptional programs, as well as some which
are best forgotten. We're pleased to report that Al Perry's
Clambake (now airing Tuesdays from 10 p.m. to midnight) is
one of the former. Perry embodies all that is great about community
broadcasting: He's a born deejay, completely comfortable speaking
to an audience he never sees; he has an infectious enthusiasm
for the music he plays, and could care less if these tunes ever
saw a Billboard chart; his selections cover a hugely eclectic
range that includes blues, twang, rock, lounge, and New Orleans
R&B; and thankfully, Al remains undamaged by any desire to
be terminally cool. Best of all, it's non-commercial radio. Now
that's totally hip.
