Best Downtown Keg Party
The Double Zero
STAFF PICK: This immutable hole-in-the-wall establishment
smack dab in the middle of Congress Street has housed a variety
of failed businesses over the years. But finally it's come into
its own as The Double Zero Pub and Eatery. Making the switch
from cafe to barroom, the new owners have stripped the place down
to basics: semi-plastered-over red brick, cement floors, and high
ceilings sans acoustic buffers. They've ditched the uncomfortable
cafe furniture in favor of a couple of pool tables, barstools,
couches and the like, leaving plenty of space in the front for
live music. There are half a dozen brews on tap, including local
Nimbus' Belgian white and pale ale. But to properly acclimate
to the buzz of the place, the Double Zero Long Island Iced Tea
is the order. They're always $2, leaving plenty for cab fare.
After imbibing this nasty but potent drink, order another and
ingratiate yourself by starting an argument about punctuation
with the bartender. He'll politely listen. What else is he going
to do? Noisy music starts around 9 p.m., featuring a bevy of local
talent ranging from old school punkers to hippie cafe troubadours.
It's like being able to crash someone's party any night of the
week.
