Best Malaysian
Seri Melaka
READERS' PICK: For those who share the suspicion that virtually
all Chinese food in Tucson is made at one large, central processing
plant, then distributed to various restaurants by horse and buggy
to ensure that special extra sogginess, try a change of place
with Seri Melaka. It offers better-than-average Chinese
selections, but the real treats here are the Malaysian specialties.
These include a thick noodle dish with shrimp and tofu called
Mee Goreng; the Bee Hoon made with thin rice noodles; and the
wonderful Nasi Lemak, made with tomato, shrimp, pineapple, and
potatoes. The real show-stopper, however, is the incendiary Sambal,
known 'round those parts as "The Queen Of Hotness."
Not for the faint of heart, the Queen will leave your forehead
glistening, your sinuses clearing, and your palate begging for
more. Mercifully, you can cool the fire with a nicely unusual
selection of beers, including Guinness and Samuel Smith's Pale
Ale, which appear on the menu as one of the few positive legacies
of British imperialism.
