Best Ethiopian
Zemam's
STAFF PICK: OK, so it's the only Ethiopian restaurant in town. Let's not quibble: Zemam's is terrific. As anyone who's tried to walk in and get a table on a weekend night knows, this uniquely African cuisine, with touches of Arab and Indian influences, has Tucsonans lining up. Just ask occasional celeb diner Danny Glover if you still need convincing. The beef and lamb dishes, such as the yebeg wat, tend to be the spicier offerings, while the vegetable-oriented dishes featuring potatoes or chick peas are on the mild side. The "Zemam's Plate" offers a good sampler of any three dishes, all consumed blissfully sans knife and fork, using instead the soft, spongy, chapati-like Injera bread. For those who've daydreamed of opening their own unique, intimate family-run restaurant, observe the hard work and dedication of Amanuel Gebremarium and his family. Odds are, you'll keep the day job and stick to Zemam's for dinner.
One Reader RoarsNothing else is like Zeman's Ethiopian food--something different from the same-old same-old. Getting to eat with your fingers, bringing your own wine, and conversing with the owner makes for a unique dining experience.
