Best Way To Encourage Children's Literacy

STAFF PICK: Every year, the Tucson Public Library offers a free summer reading program that encourages parents and children to read together. This year, the program's theme was "Go For The Gold," in conjunction with the Summer Olympics. (In addition to the reading program, many branches also offer entertainment and informational sessions for children, along with regular story hours.) Although incentives are offered for the completion of certain goals--a "mystery prize" for the first three hours of cumulative reading, a bookmark for the second three, etc.--the real goal is to inculcate in children a love of reading. Many research studies show that a child's reading ability is oftentimes a direct result of the amount of time a parent spends reading to and with that child. So, if you haven't already availed yourself of this wonderful community service, don't wait until next summer! Pick up a book today!
