Bookman's Used Books
1930 E. Grant Road 3733 W. Ina Road

READERS' PICK: After you shell out your hard-earned cash for the mid-wife, hospital, bassinet, layette, parenting classes, mobile in infant-stimulating black and white, and your copy of What To Expect When You're Expecting, how much money do you have left to buy nostalgic children's books to welcome your new arrival? Have you priced Dr. Seuss books and Goodnite Moon lately? Thank goodness for Bookman's children's books department. Here you'll find lots of familiar titles as well as loads of less- hyped but equally interesting kid lit. The selection changes daily because Bookman's buys from the public and resells them at about half the suggested list price. They carry books for children of all ages, too. Most are in reasonably good condition, though the popular ones tend to have been thumbed through more than a few times. Let's just say that a trip to Bookman's for children's books will give you Goosebumps and a whole lot more.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Borders Books and Music, 4235 N. Oracle Road.

STAFF PICK: In this dawning age of information overload, it's sometimes easy to overlook the obvious: The Tucson-Pima Public Library. With 17 locations, well over 100,000 books to chose from, and the privilege of taking them home without paying (for awhile anyway), how can you miss? We spoke with Susan Lynn (alias Miss Susan--Story Lady), the children's librarian at Himmel Library, and she told us nearly one-third of all the books in all the libraries are children's books, and new ones come in almost daily. Kids can explore lots of literary styles here without the burden of having to pick just their favorites, the way you must when you're purchasing. Let this be the first plastic card your children ever carry in their wallets. It's invaluable.
