Best Mexican Bakery

STAFF PICK: La Estrella Bakery, 5266 S. 12th Ave., gets high honors for its exquisite pan dulce. Phonetically as well as gastronomically pleasing, these sweet treats come with poetic names like lengua de suegra (mother-in-law's tongue), girasoles (sunflowers), piernas (legs), hebillas (belt buckles) and elotes (ears of corn). Nobody makes better pig cookies, and nobody but La Estrella puts cinnamon in their pan de huevo. The orejas are chewy-crunchy wonders and the coricos (a ring-shaped cornmeal cookie) are nearly a religious experience. You can special order traditional Mexican breads for holidays, such as a rosca de reyes for your Feast of Three Kings party or a pan de muertos for the Day of the Dead. Of course, there's no need to stand on ceremony. La Estrella makes every day a special occasion.
