KIDS
ANGEL YOUTH CENTER. 160 E. Alameda St. With summer in full swing, kids can find lots to do at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Angel Youth Recreation Center. Youth of all ages are welcome to participate in the center's free activities including billiards, ping pong, arts and crafts, music lessons, and computer games. The center is open from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and until 10:30 p.m. Downtown Saturday Nights. Call 624-2447 for information.
ARCHAEOLOGY FOR ALL. Old Pueblo Archaeology Center presents Open 1, a chance for kids ages 5 and up to learn about different cultures by participating in the excavation of a make-believe archaeological site. In addition to dig time, each session also includes an indoor craft activity and instruction in artifact cleaning and interpretation. Cost is $30 for four one-and-a-half hour sessions, or $9 per individual session. Special rates and dates available for groups. Call 798-1201 for registration and information.
Listings BUILD-A-BIKE. BICAS Youth Underground Build-A-Bike program is an eight-session program for adults and kids, offering extensive hands-on training for basic bicycle mechanics. In addition to learning new skills, you'll also be helping your community by fixing up old bikes and getting them back on the streets. Students are required to complete a 25-hour apprenticeship and final exam to earn their first bicycle. Classes are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. LIBRARY POWER. Your local library keeps summer cool for kids of all ages! Students entering middle school this fall are invited to attend Middle School Survival, a free, nationally recognized program that joins students with "Help on Call" counselors for discussions on friendships, peer pressure, safety, self-esteem, problem solving, and emotional and social changes. The program meets from 1 to 4:45 p.m. at the following locations: August 1 at the Mission Library (791-4811); August 4 at the Main Library (791-4393); August 5 at the River Center Library (791-4979); August 7 at the Wilmot Library (791-4627); and August 8 at the Columbus Library (791-4081). THEATRE WORKSHOPS. 5671 E. Speedway. Kids can write a script, get a crack at acting and more, with Arizona Youth Theater Workshops. On Friday, August 1, Juile Petry takes kids through a musical theatre rehearsal from 4 to 6 p.m. Learn vocal warm-up techniques and rehearsing a musical selection, as well as the basics of staging and being directed by a choreographer. WISDOMSEEKERS. Tucson Children's Museum. 200 S. Sixth Ave. The Children's Museum presents: the Wisdomseekers Cultural Showcase. The "Wisdomseekers," are a select group of Safford Middle School students who have gathered cultural wisdom and knowledge form adult keepers of wisdom in the community. Come find out what they've discovered from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 31, and Tuesday and Thursday, August 5 and 7. Participants will create a Navajo drum, roll a tortilla, toss a rope like the original vaqueros, weave a basket, or learn a Folklorico dance. Learn a different tradition each day.
