The safety improvement project on Mt. Lemmon Highway is helping make Mt. Lemmon more user-friendly, but there are still some traffic delays. There are no delays on weekends and National Holidays, but during the week it may be necessary to be accompanied by a pilot car up the mountain. Call the Mt. Lemmon Hotline at 749-3329 for detailed information. HIGH STEPPIN'. The Forest Service Volunteers offer free guided hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains on Fridays through August. Hikes are under seven miles, with no more than a 1,500 foot elevation gain. All hikes leave at 9:30 a.m. Children under 18 need to bring a parent or guardian. Specific locations vary. Call 881-1309 or 322-0998 for information. NATURE CONSERVANCY. Visit the Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Visitor Center and enjoy bird watching, guided tours and hikes. Regular preserve hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Take Highway 82 to Patagonia, head west on Fourth Avenue, and south on Pennsylvania. Call (520) 394-2400 for information. TOHONO CHUL PARK. 7366 N. Paseo del Norte. 742-6455. Tohono Chul Park grounds are open from 7 a.m. to sunset daily. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2. The park presents Walk in the Park tours at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tours depart at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and last about one hour. Art in the Park tours, docent-guided looks at gallery exhibits, are offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The Tohono Chul Tea Room serves twilight dinners from 5 to 8 p.m. Call 797-1711 for dinner reservations. Cost is $2, free to members. Call 742-6455 for reservations and information. SEE THE TREES. Visit the Arboretum in Flagstaff between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekends through September. Pack a picnic lunch and cool off among the many garden displays; see endangered plants and animals; or just relax under a pine. Admission is $3, free for those 18 and under.
