MT. LEMMON UPDATE. The safety improvement project on Mt. Lemmon Highway is helping make Mt. Lemmon more user-friendly, but there are still some traffic delays. There are no weekend delays on weekends and National Holidays, but during the week it may be necessary to be accompanied by a pilot car up the mountain. Call the Mt. VOLKSSPORT WALK. The Tucson Volkssport Klub is sponsoring a non-competitive 10K and 5K walk on Mt. Lemmon from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, from downtown Summerhaven. The walk is free. Call Jack Mount at 722-0530 for information.

HIGH STEPPIN'. The Forest Service Volunteers are offering free guided hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains on Fridays through August. Hikes are under seven miles, with no more than a 1,500 foot elevation gain. All hikes leave at 9:30 a.m. Children under 18 need to bring a parent or guardian. Specific locations vary. SINGLE CAMPERS. The Single Campers of Tucson are looking for new members. If you're single and enjoy camping and the outdoors, this may be for you. Membership is $12. Call Chris at 326-5721 for information.

ARCHAEOLOGY TOURS. The Center for Desert Archaeology offers half-day and full-day tours of the Romero Ruin in Catalina State Park, and rock art tours of sites near Tucson. Contact Connie Allen-Bacon at 881-2244 for more information on tours. Individual, group and corporate rates are available.

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. 2021 N. Kinney Road. 883-2702. The museum is part botanical garden, part geology museum and part zoological park. Animal interpretations are offered at 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Early morning birdwalks meet at 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saguaro flowering interpretive demonstrations are at 10 a.m. daily. on Saturday, June 22, be part of a historic Tohono O'odham desert harvest. Camp under the stars, gather fruit in the traditional manner and prepare it over an open fire. Cost is $30 for one adult and one child, $25 for ASDM members. Pre-registration is required. Museum hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday through September. Admission is $8.95 ages 13 and over, and $1.75 ages 6 through 12. Discount group rates are available.

NATURE CONSERVANCY. Visit the Nature Conservancy's Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Visitor Center and enjoy bird watching, guided tours and hikes. Regular preserve hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Take Highway 82 to Patagonia, head west on Fourth Avenue, and south on Pennsylvania. Call (520) 394-2400 for information.

TOHONO CHUL PARK. 7366 N. Paseo del Norte. 742-6455. Tohono Chul Park grounds are open from 7 a.m. to sunset daily. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2. The park presents Walk in the Park tours at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tours depart at 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and last about one hour. Art in the Park tours, docent-guided looks at gallery exhibits, are offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The Tohono Chul Tea Room serves twilight dinners from 5 to 8 p.m. Call 797-1711 for dinner reservations. Cost is $2, free to members. Call 742-6455 for reservations and information.

Out Of Town

SEE THE TREES. Visit the Arboretum in Flagstaff between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekends through September. Pack a picnic lunch and cool off among the many garden displays; see endangered plants and animals; or just relax under a pine. Admission is $3, free for those 18 and under. Follow Route 66 west to Woody Mountain Road, turn left, and head south 3.8 miles. Call (520) 774-1441 for information.
