Cheap Thrills

POETRY FEST: The Tucson Poetry Festival celebrates its "Sweet Sixteen" anniversary this weekend, with a line-up of literary talent that's brighter than ever. See this week's Books section for details.

Poets Jimmy Santiago Baca, Rebecca Byrkit, Marilyn Chin, Garrett Hongo, Cynthia Macdonald and Charles Simic are featured readers. They'll share their work and insights with a series of small group sessions. Alison Deming moderates a panel discussion on this year's theme, "the cultural and creative relativism of geography," at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. There will also be open microphone readings and performances.

Readings by the poets are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at the Tucson Center for the Performing Arts. Small group sessions will be held Saturday and Sunday mornings. Advance admission is $5 per day, $10 for the entire weekend, and tickets are available at Bentley's House of Coffee and Tea, The Bookstop, and Antigone Books. Admission at the door is $7 for the day, or $13 for a weekend pass. For information, call 620-2045.

MAXIMUM SOUND: The funky Valley of the Moon hosts the best in bluegrass, folk and international music at the annual Acoustic Mini-Fest. The lineup will include the "newgrass" sounds of Out of the Blue, haunting melodies by Tena Moyer, ragin' Cajun by Black Leather Zydeco, the unique vocal stylings of Sal Valdivia, and the five-piece Somos.

Event runs from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 5, in the Valley of the Moon, 2544 E. Allen Road, located north of Prince Road and east of Tucson Boulevard. Tickets are $6, $5 for TKMA, TBS, Desert Bluegrass Society and KXCI members, available at the door. For details, call 749-9770.

DOWNTOWN SATURDAY: On April 4, Tucson's urban core erupts with another Downtown Saturday night. Anchoring the action are the Tucson Kitchen Musicians, who'll preview May's Tucson Folk Festival with a mini-jam from 7 to 10 p.m. Ice-9 will play at the Ronstadt Transit Center; Linda Lou and The Drifters will play at Art Square, 186 E. Broadway; Copper Moon will fire up Arizona Alley; and Sapphire Kieft plays on the patio at Magpie's Pizza, 605 N. Fourth Ave.

The Tucson Arts District will also be hosting an art show fundraiser from 7 to 10 p.m. at Art Square, with great work by Tucson's countless creative types on the block. And that's in addition to the many galleries that regularly throw open their doors for these downtown events, along with crafts vendors, restaurants and bars. For more information, call 624-9977.
