ENVIRONMENTEARTHSHIP TRIP. Get first-hand knowledge of recycling for the future by joining Women Build Houses on a weekend trip to the "earthship" project in Rocky Point, Mexico. "Earthships" utilize old tires and other non-biogdegradable debris filled with sand to form structures with high thermal mass for cool dwelling in summer and warm in winter. Group will carpool to Rocky Point and help the folks at CEDO to complete an earthship dwelling. Departure is Friday, February 14, with a return scheduled for Sunday, February 16. Calle Arturo, and Morrow Education Center, 1010 E. 10th St. Some city and county landfills also have recycling centers. Call 791-5000 for hours and locations. Multi-material recycling facilities are located at Freedom Recycling, 1825 W. Price Road, near Roger and Romero roads. Call 696-0660 for hours. WOMEN BUILD HOUSES. Be informed, independent and environmentally friendly with help from Women Build Houses, a non-profit network dedicated to increasing women's access to building skills. They offer a host of sliding-scale classes, including greywater irrigation (household drainwater from sinks and showers), straw bale technology, eco-friendly household chemicals and cleaners, and passive solar design.
