Cheap Thrills CRIMES OF DESIRE: "This is a crime...of wanting buildings transformed, paint blistered to skin, flames lifted to pale necks between cascades of burnt curls; of watching frog-eyed dormers leap into blazing pools of false suns...."

So unfolds the riveting imagery of An Arsonist's Picnic, by Liliana Slomkowska. Winner of the 1994 Tucson Poetry Festival, Slomkowska is known for her fiction, essays and translations. She hails from New Haven, Conn., where she grew up speaking Polish, French and English. All of those influences are evident in her writing, which has garnered awards both here and abroad. Now she reads from her work as part of the ongoing Make a Date With A Poet series.

The free reading gets underway at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 17, in The Book Mark, 5001 E. Speedway. For details, call 881-6350.

La Cholla Blvd. Admission is free.

Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, January 16 and 17, and 3 p.m. Sunday, January 18, in The Temple of Music and Art Cabaret Theatre, 330 S. Scott Ave. Performances continue at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, January 23 and 24. Advance tickets are $7, and available by calling 696-3015. Tickets are $10 at the door.
