KUAT/KUAZ READERS' PICK: In addition to some nice jazz, KUAZ--89.1 FM and KUAZ--1550 AM bring us National Public Radio plus mostly solid local news-reporting. (Many of the local segments can also be heard on their sister station KUAT--90.5 FM, when they're not playing opera or Beethoven.) And, hey, all you fans of Rush Limbaugh: You could be in danger of a serious information deficiency due to your poor listening habits. Fortunately the situation is not life-threatening (yet) because a cure is available. All it takes is a flick of the wrist. That's right, just twist your radio dial and tune in to what the readers consider the best radio news in Tucson--National Public Radio and its local affiliate newscasts. This is award-winning, balanced and responsible reporting from a radio network that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. "Morning Edition" (5 a.m. newscast) and "All Things Considered" (4 p.m. newscast), will keep you informed. You don't pay for radio, but in this case you might consider making a donation. READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: News on local commercial radio stations generally is a pathetic stew of recycled newspaper stories read by ignorant, minimum-wage announcers who wouldn't know the correct pronunciation of "gila monster" if one bit 'em. Honestly, we don't know why stations even bother--surely the FCC doesn't give a damn about the bilge that passes for radio news in this town. But at least KNST--790 AM, is still in there trying every day--with a real news staff that actually goes out and covers events and interviews people. Its morning news show is one of the most comprehensive in town. Now if we could only get the daily newspapers to do that...
