Best Korean Comfort Food

Takamatsu Restaurant
5532 E. Speedway Blvd.

STAFF PICK: Kalbi Dolsot Bibim Bap is Korean comfort food at its best, a dish to linger over on cold winter evenings. It comes in a stone bowl that's been heated in the oven until it's too hot to touch. No matter how slowly you eat, the bowl keeps the food piping hot, and radiates a sublime warmth. The contents of the bowl are exquisite: ribs, rice and a medley of unfamiliar veggies and surprising fungi--things you may have never before encountered, but after one bite you'll crave them for life. When you're done eating, you'll want to snuggle up to the bowl and drift off to dreamland; but remember, Takamatsu is a public place. No loitering (okay, you can loiter a little but no sleeping).

HOT TIP: I've tried the other four, and Housenka is consistently the best. Their Bibimbahp, the national lunch of Korea, is a fantastic explosion for your mouth. Mix all the Kochu Jang (chili/soybean) sauce in! Why is this place always empty? --Lisa Bunker
