READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Sausage Deli, 2334 N. First Ave.
CLUE IN: A few years ago a well-known Tucson woman was paying an official friendship visit to the city of Alma-Ata, in Kazakhstan. In the course of conversation with its unabashedly male-dominated civic leadership she was asked, with a disarming lack of political correctness, what she liked to cook. With swift, virtuoso diplomacy she evaded the question by describing the deli at Rincon Market, 2513 E. Sixth St. And while that's probably as far as its fame has ever spread, there's no question that for Sam Hughes-area residents a trip to Rincon is a popular way to keep from messing up the kitchen. In addition to nummy à la carte sandwich assembly and prime deli staples, there's an eclectic mix of prepared foods: dolmades, casseroles, a variety of potato and pasta salads, puddings--if mom ever made it, they've got it. And situated amidst other conveniences such as a breakfast and burger grill, salad bar, bakery and one of the best selections of self-serve coffee to go in town, you can easily get the habit of taking your three squares a day there...Making it the very thing if you're one of those uppity American women who just won't stay in the kitchen.
