STAFF PICK: Over in the UK and Europe, people like Tucson.
More to the point, our music scene continues to hold a particular
fascination. While we promise to pass out the kudos in our annual
TAMMIES issue next spring, this one was too good to withhold:
In the September issue of Britain's Uncut magazine, an
article lauding the "Sounds of the New West" singles
out Tucson in their A-Z listing of what's cool, citing our "amazing
and incestuous array of musical talent which treats the Hotel
Congress as its unofficial clubhouse." The article goes on
to mention Green On Red, the Sidewinders, Rich Hopkins,
Howe Gelb & Giant Sand, Rainer, 35 Summers and The
Drakes. Of further significance is a separate entry for Calexico
(also included on the magazine's free CD sampler), in which Joey
Burns and John Convertino are likened to musical Cormac McCarthys
and Sam Peckinpahs. "Few records this year have gripped the
imagination as powerfully as Calexico's astonishing The Black
Light," announces Uncut. We couldn't agree more.
