The Antique Mall
3130 E. Grant Road

READERS' PICK: A longtime Tucson favorite, the Antique Mall is a well-organized, well-lit, well-serviced little industry. OK, biggish industry. What appears to be a couple thousand square feet houses the wares of multiple vendors with a centralized cash register. Some shops show a specialty, while others offer more generalized merchandise. Fine and costume jewelry, china, crockery, furniture, toys, dolls, glassware and lace--it's all here along with a plethora of helpful, friendly staffers.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Unique Antique, 5000 E. Speedway (A sign out front says Antique Outlet.)

A REAL SCREAM: Elegant Junque Shop, 4932 E. Speedway, is not only elegant, it's just plain fun. It lays claim to a collection of more than 30,000 items. Enjoy the show. The front of the store is where the collection of signage is housed, mostly ads for oil companies and dry goods, once-lustrous colors, and new glossies mixed together. From there take a short hike to the beautiful, antique pump organ in the center aisle; or check out the display case with the French-made CHiPS motorcycle toy inside. The shop has a sizable collection of silver jewelry, an intriguing array of old baseball gloves, lamps and glass wares, Elvis kitsch, divans and Tiffany-style lamps of yesteryear.

Perhaps the most tasteful arrangement is a grand old cooking stove, about a ton of green enamel and chrome, with the plastic likeness of a meringue pie posing just inside one of its open doors. And for a slice of trivia, how many of you were aware the Fisher-Price puppy pull toy (not necessarily its trademark name) originally came with a ladies' shoe hanging from its mouth? Elegant Junque Shop is cozy and compelling. Owned and operated by a Tucson family (Mom, Dad and sons), it's a great place to browse and buy.
