Kerri StrugTucson native Kerri Strug is an Olympic gold-medal winning gymnast, and a sophomore at U.C.L.A. Her new book, Landing On My Feet: A Diary of Dreams, is due out from Andrews McMeel in October.Best Gym For Working Out For working out, I like to go to the Tucson Country Club. I, like, live in the Tucson Country Club. They're known for their golf, but they have a little workout room too. I like it because it's homey and right by my house. Best Gym For Gymnastics Gymnastics World probably has the best facilities here in Tucson. It's probably one of the biggest, and they have pits--like, holes in the ground--so you can try new tricks. You can get started really young if you want to. But if not, they have programs for older kids and higher levels. There's basically a wide range 'cause everyone excels at different times and gets started at a different pace. I was about three when I started at a place called Desert West, which was bought out by Gymnastics World. Best Frozen Yogurt I love frozen yogurt. There's a place called Yogurt Station on Wilmot and Speedway, right near Trader Joe's. I used to go there almost daily when I lived here. I loved it. They don't have the same flavors every day, but my favorites are Kona coffee and peanut butter. Best Neighborhood Walk I like walking my dogs in my neighborhood, in the Tucson Country Club near Tanque Verde and Grant. We're kinda near the mountains. It's nice since I've lived away for so long to just come home and be familiar with everything. I grew up in this house. It's very peaceful here. I don't have to worry about a lot of traffic, and all the big city sort of things. Best Athletics Watched By An Athlete My parents have season tickets to the basketball games and I'm a huge UA fan. Last year, I only got to go to one or two games--I think the last game I saw they lost. My tickets are pretty high up--they're not great, but we've had them forever. Best Shopping I love to shop! My mom and I like to go to the Tucson Mall and check everything out. I collect a lot of things, but normally here I just shop for clothes. Best Summer Treat I'm a big fan of eegee's. That's a Tucson thing. I like everything, but I like their strawberry and piña colada flavors best. Best Place To Go For The Gold
The people at Heritage Jewelers, on Campbell near Fort Lowell,
are really nice. They've been there forever, and do special orders.
My mom's gotten lots of stuff for me there--earrings, some little
necklaces, things like that.
