Best Carne Asada

El Charro
311 N. Court Ave.

READERS' PICK: Since 1922, El Charro has been serving some of our readers' favorite Sonoran-style entrees. Located downtown in a charming, converted house, El Charro offers a festive atmosphere and great Mexican calendar art. They serve a carne asada that's muy sabrosa, but our tried-and-true predilection is the carne seca, a salty, garlicky, marinade of lime, dried beef and chiles. Order either in a burrito, taco, tostada or quesadilla, and you're well on your way to being muy satisfecho.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Paco's, 2645 E. Speedway. (See Best Take-Out.)

A REAL SCREAM: It isn't much to look at from the outside, but tiny Taqueria Pico de Gallo, 2618 S. Sixth Ave., is full of scrumptious surprises, not the least of which are the tender, marinated strips of beef known as carne asada. Long a favorite of beef lovers everywhere, carne asada pops up on the menus of Mexican restaurants all over Tucson. Few of these places, however, even come close to producing an asada as mouthwateringly flavorful as Pico de Gallo's. Cooked right behind the countertop, in plain view of God and everybody, this is the ultimate--lean red meat steeped in a fresh lime juice and garlic bath, and then grilled quickly over the flames and tucked into a waiting corn tortilla, fresh and made on the premises. Order a batch to fill a taco, burro or one of Pico de Gallo's signature tortas, a Mexican version of the sandwich made with a fluffy fried bun. It doesn't really matter how you get it into your mouth, just don't miss this savory pleasure.
