Best Bike Shop For Revolutionaries

STAFF PICK: Though at times it appears we're becoming a wannabe Phoenix for a bunch of don't-wannabe-Phoenicians, we've (unwittingly?) built ourselves a perfectly cyclable town. What with hundreds of miles of barely used grid streets and an ever-increasing number of bicycle-friendly thoroughfares, we can't help but feel our hearts leap and our pulses quicken when we hear the words, "When the revolution comes, will your bicycle be ready?" The words rise above the fray from the bulwarks of Bicycle Inter-Community Action and Salvage (BICAS), a two-wheelin' community organization armed to the teeth with a dedicated staff headed up by energetic program director Kim Young. By teaching kids in at-risk communities the intricacies of bike repair, BICAS returns bicycles to the road under the power of the kids who rebuild them. Using donated and recycled bicycles, BICAS also supports bicycle co-ops in towns along the border. Just recently, BICAS donated 200 bicycles to Fundación Apoyo Infantil, a youth advocacy organization in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. You can support these urban warriors by donating an old bike of your own, volunteering, or buying one of the recycled bikes for $35 to $65 from their headquarters at 920 S. Warren Ave. So get out of that car, comrades! The future rides on spoked wheels.
