Best Place To Turn For Breastfeeding Information And Support

STAFF PICK: As we face impending parenthood, many of us are told breast milk is the superior food for our precious cargo. We often wonder why in the world we should read books or take classes about something that's natural. After all, civilization came clear through the first half of this century without breastfeeding videos. However, after the arrival of said precious cargo, many new mothers find themselves overwhelmed with questions, concerns and problems regarding that most natural aspect of mothering. This is where La Leche League of Tucson comes to the rescue. Now approaching its silver anniversary as the Tucson chapter of La Leche League International, the fully trained and accredited volunteer mothers who make up La Leche League of Tucson are on hand to offer information and support to women who wish to breastfeed their babies. They offer this service in two ways: First, they conduct monthly meetings all over town for both pregnant women and mothers, and cover a variety of topics relating to breastfeeding and family life with a newborn. The meetings are free, but membership does have its privileges. There is even a special "fathers welcome" monthly meeting for couples. Second, La Leche offers telephone help for breastfeeding mothers seven days a week. La Leche is a non-profit organization and does not accept endorsements from infant formula companies or anyone else looking to influence the way a mother feeds her baby. For information about La Leche League meetings in your area, or for referral to a volunteer mother for telephone help, call 721-2516.
