Best Lardless Mexican Food

STAFF PICK: A vegetarian arriving in Tucson for the first time might feel much like the old sailor in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: "Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink." There are perhaps more Mexican restaurants here, per capita, than anywhere else in the country; and yet most of them, adhering to traditional (read: lard-o-lah) cooking methods, are sadly hands-off for the carrot juice and rice cake crowd. If you fall into this unfortunate category, an answer to your prayers is situated in the Catalina Foothills, up at Oracle and Ina roads. El Saguarito, 7216 N. Oracle Road, is a welcome provider of healthy, vegetarian-friendly Mexican food. They cook exclusively with canola oil, which, they'll happily inform you, even surpasses regular vegetable oil on health and taste scales. The food is wonderful, from fresh guacamole to creamy chilled flan. Portions are large, prices utterly reasonable (unlike other like-minded midtown restaurants), and even carnivorous Mex fans have plenty to choose from.
