Best Gift For A Baby Born In TUSD

STAFF PICK: On the same day the baby's born, pick up a magnet-school application. As anyone who has attempted to get a child enrolled in a TUSD magnet school knows, unless that kid has been on a waiting list since the moment he/she flew out of mom and into this educationally challenged city, it just ain't gonna happen. Call the magnet office and find out how to apply to the elementary, middle and high school magnet schools. Then wrap up the info and the ap nice and pretty and take it to the bedside of the lucky parents as soon as you hear the babe is bundled. Force the parents to make a choice whether their child will be interested in science and math or theatre and art. If you wait until the wee child goes home, he/she will already be too far down on the waiting list to ever get in. If you are thinking of having children, remember: Children born in certain months and placed on the list quickly have a better chance than children born later in the school year. Or you could declare yourself and your offspring to be a different race than you are, the one race they're letting out of your sad neighborhood school. (In some neighborhoods just the white kids can leave; in some neighborhoods just the non-white kids have the opportunity.) If all this baffles you, welcome to dealing with the Tucson Unified School District. Honey, do you think we should move to the Foothills? Or maybe we should join a parish.
