HISTORICAL SOULS: The Day of the Dead comes to eerie life as the Arizona Historical Society presents its annual Día de los Muertos program. According to Mexican tradition, departed souls return from the beyond to visit their earthbound buddies on this day, and mortals return the favor with a few little treats the dead enjoyed during their flesh-and-blood existence. Mesa artist Virginia Agüero spices the event with plenty of nichos and a special Altar of the Dead. Pan de Muerto (Bread of the Dead) and Mexican java will also be served. The free program begins at 7 p.m. on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, at the Historical Society, 949 E. Second St. Lighted parking is available. Call 628-5774 for information. LITHUANIAN LIFT: Join a bunch of European types, and their litany of culinary delights, when the newly formed Lithuanian Club of Southern Arizona potlucks at Himmel Park. You can learn about that fabled land's history and culture even as you chomp away on hot dish delicacies starting at 1 p.m., amidst the lovely lawns of Himmel, located at Tucson Boulevard and First Street. The event is free, though a potluck is just what is sounds like. For details, call 326-8933. TWEEDLEDEE: "Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?" Or at least the kids, teens and grown-ups of Arizona Youth Theater for their fall performances of Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice in Wonderland. And off with your knavish noggins if you don't. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 11 a.m., 2 and 4 p.m. through December 21, at the Arizona Youth Theater, 5526 E. 22nd St. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. For reservations, call 790-0844. JEWISH ART: The Tucson Jewish Community Center opens its doors to all comers for an art auction, held in conjunction with their 11th annual Judaic Book and Gift Fair. Works will be previewed at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2, with the auction beginning at 7:30 p.m. Artists will include Agam, Chagall, Miro and Picasso, just to name a few minor figures; and an original oil titled Study of the Torah, by Mordechai Rosenstein, will also be up for grabs. Tomorrow the center holds a stand-up art auction featuring many of the same names, along with wearable art and sculpture. Admission is free for both days. The fair rolls on with lectures and readings throughout next week, and a family concert by Craig Taubman and Co. at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 10. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $7.50 for ages 12 to 18 and students with college ID, and $25 for family tickets which cover two adults and all the kids. Vendors and entertainment will be on hand throughout. Call 299-3000 for information.
