KING OF CALIFORNIA: Since blazing onto the new music scene with The Blasters in 1979, Dave Alvin has made his mark as a stellar singer/songwriter, producer and poet.

Alvin's current tour with his band The Guilty Men swings into Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St., at 9 p.m. Friday, September 13. Don't let the inauspicious date fool ya--Alvin promises a rocking show full of sweat and loud guitars. His next album will be on the quiet side, so he intends to give it up tonight to aficionados eager to cut loose and shake it down. Playing the music he grew up with (country blues, city blues, rhythm and blues, honky tonk, rockabilly, hillbilly, folk, protest, gospel and surf), Alvin spins it around and never fails to bring something new to the party.

Tickets are $6 in advance from Club Congress; and $8 day of show. Call 622-8848 for more information.

A second performance by Béla Fleck and The Flecktones has been added for 10:30 p.m. Saturday, September 14, at the Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway.

Fleck, who was initially inspired by the theme to The Beverly Hillbillies, has taken the banjo from bluegrass to jazz with stops at blues and Bebop in between. Twice named Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist by Jazziz, he's received eight Grammy nominations, four with The Flecktones, and has performed worldwide.

All seats are reserved. Tickets are $20, $18 for students with ID, available at Hear's Music, Loco Records, Antigone Books, Rainbow Moods and Zip's University. Tickets can be charged by phone at 881-3947 or 327-4809 for $1.50 service fee. For more information call 327-4809.

LAST NOTES: After a successful summer tour, The Mollys make their first local appearance at the Southwest Center For Music, 2175 N. Sixth Ave., at 8 p.m. Friday, September 13. See the City Week events calendar for details.

Riding a wave of enthusiastic crowds and rave reviews, after Friday's show the band will once again hit the road for a Southern tour with scheduled stops in Chattanooga, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. The band will return in October to begin recording their next CD.

Cover charge is $6 at the door. Call 882-5643 for more information.

Singer/songwriter/finger-style guitar phenomenon Jim Henry will appear in the Southwest Center for Music Acoustic Café at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 14. Henry explores his American musical roots, which include country, bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock and roll with honesty and precision.

From the politically correct bastion of San Francisco comes the Mensclub--three guys who might be on tour because they were driven out of the bay area by angry townspeople. You can catch them rocking with their shirts off at Berky's on Fourth, 424 N. Fourth Ave., at 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 17.

Playing a testosterone-charged rock and punk hybrid in the MC5 tradition, the Mensclub claim to be "not sexist, just remarkably sexy." Feel free to take your shirt off and scratch yourselves--you, too, can become a member.

Call 622-0376 for information on cover charge.

Folk-pop band The Mountain Goats open for New Zealand guitarist Alastair Galbraith at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, at Sound Addict, 714 N. Stone Ave. Call 882-5120 for more information.

And finally, no week would be complete without the latest news from Chick Cashman, who cordially invites you to the marriage of Jahmi Leha Phiel to Daniel Jacob Schnieder at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, at Club Congress. Drag queen minister Alotta Hormones will conduct the ceremony and Chick himself will be giving away the bride. A champagne reception will follow and gifts will be accepted. TW
