Cheap Thrills PRIMAL SPLURGE: Local artist and Raw Gallery owner George E. Huffman once again breaks out his fun collection of large canvases with their primitive cast of characters to inaugurate a new series of exhibitions in the Hotel Congress lobby, curated by neighboring Bero Gallery. This first show, primal/preschool: A Mini Retrospective, opens with a reception from 8 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 4. Complimentary champagne and hors d'oeuvres will be served, with a live rockabilly set by "the terp." Call 622-8848 for information.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING: Youngsters lasso both the familiar and the fantastic, when Teens 'n' Tots (T'NT) hosts a Southwest Tellers of Tales meeting at Centro Cultural de las Americas.

The theme is Stories of the Old Pueblo: Then and Now, and will feature up to 26 talkers, including Erik Dominguez, who will spin his yarn in both Spanish and English.

"Members in this current group run from ages 13 to 18," says mentor Glenda Bonin. "Erik is a UA freshmen studying linguistics, and he's a very talented storyteller."

Bonin says the stories are often a blend of "tried-and-true originals" retrofitted to each kid's personal experience. "Rather than in the stories themselves, the secret is in the telling," she says.

"The whole point of this program is to teach these teens skills that they can then teach to others," she says. "Then they can mentor other kids coming through."

Funded by a Tucson Community Foundation grant, and based at the Tucson Children's Museum, Tellers of Tales is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting the art of storytelling. This meeting also sets the stage for the Tales of Arizona...Then and Now storytelling festival, to be held September 26 and 27 at the UA.

Stories of the Old Pueblo unfolds at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, in Centro Cultural de las Americas, 40 W. Broadway. Admission is free. For information, call 629-0270.

HOW SUITE IT IS: Perch yourself out under September skies and let a few local stars cross your path in the form of Jazzberry Jam, presented as part of the Tucson Jazz Society's Plaza Suite Fall concert series.

Considered the Old Pueblo's best Dixieland and swing band, the troupe will open their show on Sunday, September 7, with a musical stroll down Bourbon Street. Featuring Jeff Haskell on piano, Tom Ervin on slide trombone and Mike Porter on clarinet, the band will highlight selections from their latest CD, No Preservatives.

Performance is 6 to 9 p.m. in St. Philip's Plaza, 4380 N. Campbell Ave. Tickets are $8, $4 for Tucson Jazz Society members, and available at the door. Call 743-3399 for details.

MOONLIGHT MELODY: Lazlo Veres will conduct the Tucson Pops Orchestra in another installment of the Music Under the Stars series on Sunday, September 7.

Featured violin soloist Jessica Solano performs Mozart's Concerto No. 4, and the Southwest String Quartet pays musical tribute to The Three Little Javelinas.

The free concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Reid Park DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center. Free shuttle parking will be available from the southwest corner of El Con Mall, beginning at 5:30 p.m. For information, call 577-2410. TW
