NAKED LURCH: Great news! In case you didn't hear, the wind kicked up something fierce at Lollapalooza--I think it might have been one of them twister things--and the one band that everybody in Tucson wanted to see, Soul Coughing, didn't even play. So you can stop feeling like you missed out. But you'll be kicking yourself if you miss that big, bad rock-and-roll storm that is Naked Prey. The band's appearances have been few and far between since last winter, so Van Christian and the boys will have some new songs. The music is raw and the insights edgy from a man who helped define the desert rock sound. The show is Friday, August 16, at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Ricky Gelb opens at 9 p.m. Cover charge is a miniscule $3 at the door. Call 622-8848 for more information. DREAM CLEAVER: Where do you come up with a band name like Edna Swap? Well, vocalist Anne Preven says the name came to her in a nightmare. We'll leave it up to you Jungian therapists to figure that one out. Edna Swap's new release, Chicken, just might give you some nightmares of your own--or at least some very bad ideas. Just listen to these tunes: "Way Down" is the ballad of a lady who kills her husband and buries him under the house; "Therapy" is the tale of a person trying to talk her way out of a mental hospital. Hey, we've all been there. These guys sound like a Sex Pistols, Mick Ronson, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix smoothie. You'd be crazy not to check 'em out. You can hear 'em on Sunday, August 18, at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Tenderloin and Stinky Slinky are also on the bill. The show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $3, available at the door. STRINGS ATTACHED: If you've missed the Rialto Theatre, you won't want to miss The Carpetbeggers as they make their Tucson debut. This midwestern import mixes up roots rock, rockabilly and hillbilly with just two guitars and a standup bass. The sound has been earning rave reviews around the country. The show begins at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, at the Empire, 61 E. Congress St. Tickets are $4 at the door. For more information call 795-1420. GET STONED: For all you maggot brain dope dogs who want the funk, I.G.P.'s got it at the Third Stone, 500 N. Fourth Ave., at 9 p.m. Thursday, August 15. Cover charge is only $2. Call 628-8844 for more information. The party continues at the Third Stone when The Beat Angels slither down from Tempe for an evening of good ol' rock-and-roll debauchery at 9 p.m. Friday, August 16. Get there early and grab some dinner--you can't keep up with this band on an empty stomach. Besides, the food at the Stone rules. Cover charge is $3. Another Tempe import, Satellite, invades the Third Stone at 9 p.m. Saturday, August 17. Cover charge is $3 for this rockin' outfit also from Tempe. LAST NOTES: Traditional Eastern Indian music group Sanjaya (formerly known as Jubal), will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 17, on the patio at The Casbah, 628 N. Fourth Ave. Admission is free, although donations are encouraged. Call 881-3947 for more information. MUSIC NOTES: STR Entertainment and Meridian Records are accepting submissions of original material (three-song cassette) for the Music Search '96 talent contest. This year's winning artist will receive--get this--a complete recording package including 5,000 CDs, studio time, radio promotion, distribution, marketing support and a hometown CD release party. Woo-hoo! Runners-up earn a slot on the Music Search '96 single-sampler CD solicited to music professionals including selected major-label A&R contacts. All artists submitting material (including those awarded prizes) will retain the musical rights to both their compositions and any recordings of their songs. So get those demos together! All entries must be postmarked no later than September 30, 1996. Interested parties can call toll free at 1-888-8Music8 for entry information. BROOOOCE! We'll keep you posted as to where and when tickets will be going on sale.
