DANCES WITH TOADS: The Hot Desert Love Toads heat up the TFTM Contra and Square Dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 5, at the First Congregational Church, 824 N. Second Ave. There's plenty of parking in the large, lighted lot at Second Street and Second Avenue. Dancers of all abilities are invited to this hoe-down of traditional music on fiddle, bass, guitar and more. All dances are explained by experienced callers. GREAT BALLS OF FIRE: All Northwest Fire District stations will host open houses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 5. Visitors are invited to tour the stations, get a close-up look at trucks and equipment and talk with the firefighters. Open house locations are: 1520 W. Orange Grove Road; 4151 W. MOON WALK: Valley of the Moon once again opens the grounds from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, for a leisurely stroll through the pathways, caves, pools and gardens of the "land built of rock and imagination." Valley of the Moon is tucked away at 2544 E. Allen Road, just north of Prince Road and east of Tucson Boulevard. Admission is free, with donations gladly accepted. Call 323-1331 for information.
TELESCOPE VIEWING: Focus your sights on Flandrau Science Center, that funny-looking building on the north side of the UA mall east of Cherry Street, for a host of fun summer shows with lights and lasers set to rock and country music, spellbinding computer animation and amazing IMAX aerial imagery. Shows range from $3 to $5. The center also offers free nighttime telescope viewing 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday nights, providing the sky is clear. Call 621-4515 for information.
