'ROUND TOWN: Don't miss champions of KFMA's Test Department, ska sensation Warsaw, with guests Giant Steps and Bus Rider, at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Skrappy's, 3710 N. Oracle Road. Warsaw has been creating quite a buzz in both Tucson and Phoenix for their tight, high-energy skankin' shows. Call 408-9644 for more information.

Sound Bites At the forefront of the Northwest Coast cocktail craze, The Nightcaps have been jazzing together since early '95, with high-profile appearances including spots at both NXNW and SXSW, and the Northern Exposure wrap party a few years back. Because they're sincere and serious musicians, well, according to their press kit I'm not supposed to call them a "lounge act," but rather refer to them as a jazz combo, even though a lounge is precisely where you're going to find them Saturday, August 2--and not just any lounge, but The Airport Lounge, 20 E. Pennington St. Call 882-0400 for more information.

Seven Mary Three--you remember them, they had that hit song "Cumbersome" off of their hit record American Standard, back in late '95 or early '96? Well, they're on the road touring their June 3 release, RockCrown, with Five For Fighting. The show starts at 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, at The Rock, 136 N. Park Ave. Tickets are $10 in advance. Call 629-9211 for more information.

KFMA and the Club Congress present Kara's Flowers with 35 Summers and Spyche for a 92-cent special--that's 92 cents at the door, NOT 92-cent drinks! The show starts at 9:30 p.m. at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Cover is $3 at the door. Call 622-8848 for more information. Also at the Congress this week is the Lollapalooza pre-party on Tuesday, August 5: Get your rocks off with Lolla second stagers, the matchless Demolition Doll Rods!!!

Local favorites The Mollys kick off a five-month national tour from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, August 2, at The Boondocks Lounge, 3360 N. First Ave. On the road to support their increasingly successful release, Hat Trick, they bid adieu to the Old Pueblo for a date in Houston on August 7. Cover is $4 at the door. Call 690-0991 for more information about the show, or 326-8793 for more specific information about The Mollys.

Also coming up at the Boondocks Lounge, High Tone Records recording artists 13, featuring Lester Butler, perform next Thursday, August 7. Although a fairly recent addition to the L.A. music scene, the band members hail from other groups you might recall: Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, The Blasters, Rosie Flores' band, and the Screamin' Jayhawks. Cover is $5 at the door.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE BAD BOYS: Congratulations to the hard-scrabble Bad Newz Blues Band, who've been sweating it out in their pin-striped suits for the past couple of weeks on the main stage of the Arizona Blues Showdown in Phoenix. Though the band placed first out of 23 bands in their showcase on July 19, they didn't even get to stick around for the honors because they had to hot-foot it back to Tucson for a local Saturday night gig.

Inside sources tell us they swept the finals on Sunday, July 27, reportedly prompting at least one judge to comment, "I've never seen (an Arizona) band that could take Memphis, but I saw one yesterday." The Bad Newz boys won $1,000 to help defray travel costs as they advance to the international competition in Memphis, Tennessee, on October 11.

EXTRAVAGANZA '98: If you're in a band, get your act together, because the Nashville Entertainment Association (NeA) is accepting submissions for their annual NeA Extravaganza '98, to be held, of course, in Music City. This marks the 13th year the NeA has staged the event to showcase the talents of unsigned bands and artists, with this year's proceeds benefiting that city's Music and Visual Arts Education Foundation. Why should you bother? Here are a few reasons: BR-549, The Verve Pipe, The Refreshments, Self, Cowboy Mouth--are you getting the picture? Band submissions should include the following: A three-song cassette/CD, bio, photo, completed artist application form (available at the front desk at the Tucson Weekly), and a $10 dollar processing fee. Send submissions to: NeA at Extravaganza '98, P.O. Box 121948, Nashville, TN 37212. Deadline is September 30. Need more information? Call (615) 327-4308; or find them online at http://www.extravaganza.org. TW
