Cheap Thrills DOWNTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT: Tucson's cultural core is exposed when galleries, restaurants and clubs open their doors for another Downtown Saturday Night, running from 7 to 10 p.m. on August 1.

The musical lineup includes Homero Cerón and Cool Breeze at the Ronstadt Transit Center. This spicy band travels the rhythmic planet, from Spanish and African to Mexican, Latin and Caribbean jazz. Cool Breeze includes Cerón on mallets, Howard Wooten on guitar, Mike Levy on bass, and Robin Horn on drums.

A cappella belters Catacoustic Groove--featuring Jay Lehman, Erik Herman, Bruce Bayless and Harold Russell--perform jazz, blues, pop and doo-wop in Arizona Alley. And the kids of Brown Sugar--Rahjah and Joi Orme, and Awelle Odima, along with "Mom Anita"--perform R&B, hip-hop and Latino music at the corner of Fifth Street and Fourth Avenue.

Pete Fine and Beyond Words--with Fine on guitar, Rick Moquin on bass, Paul Falinski on keyboards and Mike Gigas on drums--play heavy fusion at Pennington Street and Sixth Avenue.

OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD PHYSICS: Maybe you never uttered the words physics and fun in the same breath. Now's the time to alter your verbiage, as the UA Physics Department presents Science and Star Wars.

For three consecutive Fridays, kids and adults are invited to campus for a free showing of the Star Wars Trilogy. In addition to the movies, scientists will pull out their physics bag-o-tricks related to the film. You'll learn how a spaceship orients itself, witness rocket propulsion in action, and discover the physics of light sabers. Rumor has it there may also be appearances by select Star Wars characters.

Events run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays, July 31 through August 14, in the Physics and Atmospheric Sciences Building, Room 201, 1118 E. Fourth St. Star Wars screens on July 31; The Empire Strikes Back on August 7; and Return of the Jedi on August 14. For more information, call 621-4969.

EMOTIONAL ZOO: Family dysfunction is dished up full-force in the Catalina Foothills High School Alumni Theatre production of The Glass Menagerie. This Tennessee Williams classic delves in the darker side of emotion, presented through the twisted lens of one of this century's most masterful playwrights.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 30 through August 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, August 2, in the CHS Little Theatre, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. Tickets are $7, $4 for seniors and children ages 12 and under, and are available by calling 577-5090.

DANCE DIVISION: The excellent UA Dance Division opens its season with a benefit to support the touring Dance Ensemble--a troupe of UA students performing at the Jazz Dance World Congress Festival in Phoenix in August.

...And the gods take pity on anyone endeavoring to do any physical activity in Phoenix in August.

Locally, you can check out On the Road Again at 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, in the UA Gittings Dance Theater, located on the UA mall directly north of McKale Center.

Concert features graduate student dancers and faculty choreographers performing seven pieces ranging from modern and classical ballet to Latin and jazz rhythms. Highlights include the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, the new piece Pockets, holdin' a groove!, and Susan Quinn's Sabor a Mi. Tickets are $6 and $8 at the door. TW
