Filler Cheap Thrills

OUT OF THE BLUE: The bluegrass is in bloom at Tohono Chul, 7366 N. Paseo del Norte, tempered with a hybrid of swing, contemporary folk and even the blues. That's right, the park branches out with a moonlight concert by acoustic quartet Out of the Blue at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 30, in the performance garden. Admission is $2 for members and children, $5 for non-members. If you haven't already reserved a space, bring something to sit on. Call 742-6455 for information.

CABARET MAGRITTE: Brace yourselves--one of the Old Pueblo's most reliable cheap thrills comes to a screeching halt this weekend as Cabaret Magritte gives its final performance at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. But they're going out with a bang (so to speak) as The Little Dinks bring their "Live Sex Show" to town for a one-night stand at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Music and spoken word by Jeff Fulcan, Annie Lopez and other Tucson and Phoenix artists also highlight the show. The warning label reads: "Though crass language and adult material will abound, nudity will be confined to the audience." Show is 18-and-over only, and tickets are $3 at the door.

DOWNTOWN SATURDAY: Olly olly oxen freeee! It's market day in the Downtown Arts District on Saturday, June 1. Discover new gems and visit old favorites as the galleries leave their doors open all day and into the night. Beat the heat with a 4 o'clock matinee of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? at the Screening Room, 127 E. Congress St. As the sun goes down, street theatre performers, balloon artists, belly dancers and musicians seep out from the underground to amaze and entertain. Catch the rhythms of Pulse World Beat Ensemble at 7 p.m. at the Ronstadt Transit Center. The information booth at Sixth Avenue and Congress Street offers a complete schedule of events. Call 624-9977 for information.

BOOKSIGNING: Mark this in your daytimer, murder mystery readers: Local author Jonathan Lowe signs Postmarked for Death, his debut novel our inside source describes as "(the story of) a disgruntled postal worker, sort of like the Unabomber," from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Clues Unlimited, 123 S. Eastbourne, in the Broadway Village center. For information, call 326-8533.

LAND ON THE MOON: Valley of the Moon, 2544 E. Allen Road, is part Narnia, part Wonderland and part Middle Earth, with a dash of Oz thrown in for good measure. And for a few weekends a year, the keepers of George Phar Legler's "magical land built of rock and imagination" open the gates to let you explore its carefully tended paths, caves, pools and gardens. Walk the Moon between 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, in the quiet neighborhood north of Prince Road and east of Tucson Boulevard. Admission is free, with donations gladly accepted. Call 323-1331 for information. TW
