The author of 11 books of fiction and non-fiction, including Winter, Oil Notes, Platte River and The Lost Grizzlies, Bass' most recent publication is The Sky, The Stars, The Wilderness, described by Publisher's Weekly as "stories that can only increase Bass' reputation as a writer remarkably able to put people in nature in a way that enhances our understanding of both." The free reading begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the UA Modern Languages Building auditorium, located on campus on the north side of the main mall. Call 321-7760 for details. VISUAL SNACK: In his new show, Junk Food for the Thoughtless, Jorge Arteaga uses a bright palette and resounding kitchiness to portray society's rampant attitudes of satire and irony. With themes ranging from extra-terrestrials and the Statue of Liberty to convenience stores, his art resonates with "an uncompromised style in expressionism and symbolism." Junk Food for the Thoughtless runs through March 28 in Epic Cafe, 745 N. Fourth Ave. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For details, call 624-6844. BE-BOP BASH: This year marks the 20th anniversary of AZ Jazz Week, a showcase of jazz by UA students and faculty. In light of that momentous watermark, the UA School of Music and Dance hosts a fantastic series of performances, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, with Quite a Day O' Dixie, featuring the Borderline 7 Dixieland Jazz Band from Nogales High School. They'll be joined by the UA's Olive Street Stompers and the Rob Wright Dixieland Band. Tickets are $6, $5 for faculty and staff, $3 for students and seniors. Also on Sunday is a show by AZ Jazz II, directed by Peter Crawford with guest artist Peter Erskine. Performance is 8 p.m. Tickets are $6, $5 for staff and faculty, $3 for students and seniors. The celebration continues at 8 p.m. Monday, March 9, with a performance by the jazz faculty. Tickets are $10, $8 for faculty and staff, $5 for students and seniors. At 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, the Choraliers will be featured with Half Dozen of the Other. Tickets are $6, $5 for faculty and staff, $3 for students and seniors. On Wednesday, March 11, AZ Jazz II presents an 8 p.m. performance. Tickets are $6, $5 for faculty and staff, $3 for students and seniors. Finally, JazzWerx, the Tucson Jazz Society youth big band and UA combos, perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 12. Admission is free.
All performances are in UA Crowder Hall, located on campus in
the Music Building, at the south end of the pedestrian underpass
on Speedway east of Park Avenue. Tickets are available at the
