BENEVOLENT TYKES: Budding thespians from Green Fieldramatic
talents to the test in Babes in Arms, a classic musical
celebration by Rogers and Hart.
Appropriately, it's the story of a group of kids who create their
own show in an attempt to help their parents, who happen to be
out-of-work vaudevillians. Taking place during a summer on Cape
Cod, the masterpiece includes such stage-stoppers as "My
Funny Valentine," "Johnny One Note" and "Where
or When."
Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 4 through
6, in the Green Fields Center for Performing Arts, 6000 Camino
de la Tierra. Performances continue at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday.
Admission is $3, $2 for students. For details, call 297-2288.
SPRING FLING: Learn the rich idiom of traditional crops
when Native Seeds/SEARCH hosts its annual Spring Open House.
You'll also be able to buy your own seeds in time for spring
planting, from corn, beans and squash to tomatoes, chiles and
herbs. Those friendly NS/S staffers will also be on hand to answer
your questions, and displays will feature plenty of crafts, alongside
the usual selection of desert foods and books.
Since it took root on Fourth Avenue a couple years back, this
little hub has opened many eyes to the time-honored crops, seeds
and farming methods long sustaining native people throughout the
Southwest and northern Mexico. Luck would have it that many are
suitable for modern urban farmers in the Old Pueblo.
The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 6,
at NS/S, 526 N. Fourth Ave.
BOUND BONANZA: More than 20,000 books, magazines, musical
scores, records and maps will be up for grabs at Friends of the
UA Library's 24th annual book sale.
This granddaddy of bound gatherings has everything you need to
round out your collection, all at fire-sale prices. And proceeds
help perpetuate the vital functions of the UA's vast research
repository.
The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 4, on the
UA Main Library Patio, at University Boulevard and Cherry Avenue.
For information, call 621-2373.
ARTISTIC ORACLE: The funky little town of Oracle rolls
out the carpet for its seventh annual arts festival. Most events
and exhibits are indoors for this self-guided tour of galleries
and shops, with pink flags marking the numerous locations.
"This is the public's only opportunity to get inside many
of the artists' studios, and it's a great opportunity to get to
know the artists, enjoy special demonstrations and attend studio
talks," says festival co-founder Jenny Kilb. "The main
comment we've heard in previous years was how friendly and willing
to talk all the artists were."
The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 5 through 7, in Oracle. Take
Oracle Road north to Highway 77, traveling east from Oracle Junction.
Drive time is approximately 45 minutes. Call 1-520-896-2170 for
additional information.
