Who Can Benefit From Wound Care?

Wounds are more than just skin deep. They can affect every aspect of a person’s life, from mobility and independence to overall health and well-being. Whether you are dealing with a slow-healing wound, a surgical complication, or a physical condition that makes wound healing difficult, specialized wound care may be the key to restoring your quality of life.

With extensive experience in general and vascular surgery and more than 8,000 successful surgeries to my name, I have dedicated my career to helping patients heal. Now, as the director of the Wound Center of Tucson, I take a whole-body approach to wound care, helping patients address underlying health conditions that may prevent proper healing. I have also earned the Certified Wound Specialist Physician (CWSP) credential from the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM), underscoring my commitment to the highest standards in wound care.

Who Needs Wound Care?

Many people think that wounds heal on their own with time and proper cleaning, but for some individuals, healing is far more complicated. You may benefit from professional wound care if you have:

  • Diabetic wounds – Diabetes can lead to poor circulation and nerve damage, making even small wounds a serious health risk. Without proper care, diabetic ulcers can become infected or lead to amputations.

  • Venous leg ulcers – These painful wounds, often caused by poor circulation in the veins, require specialized treatments to reduce swelling and promote healing.

  • Arterial ulcers – These wounds result from poor blood flow, which can deprive tissues of oxygen and lead to severe complications, including gangrene.

  • Pressure sores (bedsores) – Prolonged immobility can cause painful pressure ulcers that need advanced wound care to prevent infection and further tissue damage.

  • Traumatic wounds – Injuries such as lacerations, burns, puncture wounds, or surgical complications can require expert wound care to prevent infection and improve healing.

  • Surgical wounds that won’t heal – Post-surgical complications can lead to incisions reopening (surgical dehiscence) or healing improperly, requiring intervention to promote proper recovery.

If you or a loved one are struggling with any of these conditions, professional wound care can help reduce pain, speed up recovery, and prevent severe complications.

How Can Wound Care Improve Healing?

Wound care is about much more than just treating an open sore—it is about addressing the root causes that prevent healing. At the Wound Center of Tucson, we use the latest advancements in wound care, including:

  • Advanced dressings and therapies – We use specialized wound dressings, debridement techniques, and skin grafts to promote faster healing.

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy – This treatment helps oxygenate tissues and improve circulation, making it especially beneficial for diabetic and arterial wounds. While our center does not offer this therapy directly, we refer patients to trusted providers for this specialized treatment.

  • Nutritional support – Proper nutrition plays a vital role in healing. We work with patients to ensure they receive the nutrients necessary for tissue repair.

  • Improving circulation – For patients with arterial or venous ulcers, we use treatments to enhance blood flow and prevent further complications.

  • Preventive care – We help patients implement lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation, increased mobility, and improved diabetes management, to prevent future wounds.

My approach to wound care goes beyond just healing the wound—I focus on caring for the whole body. By addressing underlying health conditions, promoting metabolic health, and encouraging long-term wellness, I strive to improve my patients’ overall quality of life.
