Wah-hoo, Ah-ha! An enthusiastic start to the multi-name, eight-45 RPM discography of Tucson's The Dearly Beloved. Kicking off in '63, the group called themselves The Intruders and played surf music at skating rinks for $10 a night. When Beatlemania hit the Old Pueblo, The Intruders, consisting of Tom Walker, Pete Schuyler, Terry Lee, and Shep Cooke added Larry Cox as their vocalist and as many local groups of the era, headed towards fab-four mop-top territory. The group won a battle-of-the-bands contest, which resulted in the recording and release of this, their first slab of wax. The recording session took place in the label owner's living room in a house near Craycroft and 5th Street—one take was spoiled by his mom flushing the toilet! My copy of this 45 originally had white Gallantry Records labels had glued on! They fell off to reveal a gold label, stating "Galaxy Record Co., Houston Texas, USA," an unsolved mystery ... While the top side of this record is an uptempo Mersey-beat inspired romp, the B-side is a teenage-breakup ballad mired in a muddy and echo-y recording. The Intruders released two more 45s before changing their name to The Quinstrells and then, The Dearly Beloved.
Lee Joseph grew up in Tucson. He's a DJ (Luxuriamusic.com), marketer of cool shit (Reverberations Media) and founder/CEO of internationally respected Dionysus Records, an indie that has long specialized in releasing super-rare music, and more. He came of age in the first wave of Tucson punk rock and is an expert on Tucson music. He now lives in California.
