Director Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King) has gone a step too far for the MPAA with this delightful children’s film about a little girl, her dead father and her brain-damaged, adult boyfriend. He’s also done a good job capturing the real essence of a fairy tale, which is to say that this is a movie about children, sex, death, dismemberment and taxidermy. If that appeals to you, and you want to see some inventively gorgeous cinematography, you should probably check out Tideland quickly, because its bizarre and disturbing imagery will ensure that it has a short run in the theaters.
