There are a half-dozen books in the Mortal Instruments series, but the odds are we’ll never get to see six movies. The first installment, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, has already been declared a box-office failure and the second is already in production … apparently for nobody in particular. It’s that same Twilight stuff all over again—haunted teenage girl meets smoldering slightly older British man-beast during a battle for eternity. But this isn’t even up to those meager standards. Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower have zero spark between them. And without that, the supernatural junk weighs this movie down even more. It’s also beset with pacing problems, too much story (trying to set up future chapters that will likely never be filmed), and some first-class dopiness, even for a young adult adaptation.
